Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, beaten
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 ½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour
- For the Filling:
- 1 cup finely chopped apples (about 1 medium apple)
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in granulated sugar, beaten egg, melted butter, and salt.
- Gradually add flour, about a cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may not need all the flour.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, prepare the filling: In a small bowl, mix chopped apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a lightly floured surface.
- Roll the dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
- Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a small border on one long edge.
- Sprinkle the apple and cinnamon mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
- Starting from the long edge with the filling, tightly roll up the dough. Pinch the seam to seal.
- Cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
- Place the slices in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan, cut-side up.
- Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again for 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency.
- Let the rolls cool slightly, then drizzle with the glaze.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice to the filling.
- If you don’t have active dry yeast, instant yeast can be used. You can skip the proofing step and add it directly to the dry ingredients.
- Ensure your apples are finely chopped so they cook through evenly.
