Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • For the Glaze:
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in granulated sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
  3. Add flour and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough rises, prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix well.
  7. Gently toss diced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  8. Punch down the risen dough. Roll it out into a 12×18 inch rectangle on a floured surface.
  9. Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a ½ inch border on one long edge.
  10. Sprinkle the diced apples over the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  11. Starting from the long edge with the filling, tightly roll up the dough. Pinch the seam to seal.
  12. Cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
  13. Place the slices cut-side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  14. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  15. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  16. Prepare the glaze: Beat cream cheese and softened butter until smooth.
  17. Beat in vanilla extract and powdered sugar until combined.
  18. Add milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
  19. Spread glaze over warm cinnamon rolls.

Notes

  • For softer rolls, use milk instead of water in the dough.
  • Ensure your apples are diced small enough to distribute evenly.
  • Don’t overmix the dough after adding flour.
  • Let the rolls rise in a consistently warm place.
