Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 2 cups diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- For the Glaze:
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in granulated sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Add flour and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix well.
- Gently toss diced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Punch down the risen dough. Roll it out into a 12×18 inch rectangle on a floured surface.
- Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a ½ inch border on one long edge.
- Sprinkle the diced apples over the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Starting from the long edge with the filling, tightly roll up the dough. Pinch the seam to seal.
- Cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
- Place the slices cut-side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Prepare the glaze: Beat cream cheese and softened butter until smooth.
- Beat in vanilla extract and powdered sugar until combined.
- Add milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
- Spread glaze over warm cinnamon rolls.
Notes
- For softer rolls, use milk instead of water in the dough.
- Ensure your apples are diced small enough to distribute evenly.
- Don’t overmix the dough after adding flour.
- Let the rolls rise in a consistently warm place.
