Description
These Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Muffins offer a gourmet twist on a classic. Browning the butter adds a deep, nutty, and complex flavor, elevating these muffins beyond the ordinary. Each bite delivers a rich, moist texture with pockets of melted chocolate.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Brown the butter: In a light-colored saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the butter turns amber and nutty brown bits appear at the bottom. Immediately pour the browned butter into a heatproof bowl to cool slightly.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the slightly cooled brown butter into the wet ingredients and whisk to combine.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are okay.
- Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
- Divide the batter evenly among the 12 muffin cups.
- Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.
- Let the muffins cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Use a light-colored pan to easily see the butter browning.
- Watch the butter carefully; it can burn quickly once it starts to brown.
- Do not overmix the batter; it makes for tough muffins.
- Store leftover muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
