Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust
- 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- Pinch of nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until deeply caramelized. Remove from heat.
- Sprinkle the crumbled bacon and Gruyère cheese evenly over the bottom of the unbaked pie crust.
- Top with the caramelized onions.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until well combined.
- Carefully pour the egg mixture over the fillings in the pie crust.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the center is set and a knife inserted near the edge comes out clean.
- Let the quiche cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For the best caramelized onions, cook them low and slow. Patience brings out the sweetness.
- You can substitute Gruyère with Swiss or sharp white cheddar cheese.
- If your pie crust starts browning too quickly, cover the edges loosely with aluminum foil during baking.
