Description
Make juicy and flavorful honey garlic chicken skewers using your oven, grill, or air fryer. This recipe is quick for weeknights and great for parties.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 medium red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 medium yellow onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks (optional)
- Wooden or metal skewers
Instructions
- If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, minced garlic, sesame oil, and black pepper to create the marinade.
- Place the cubed chicken into the marinade. Toss to coat completely. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours. Reserve about 1/4 cup of the marinade for basting later.
- Thread the chicken pieces onto the skewers, alternating with the bell pepper, onion, and pineapple chunks if using.
- Choose your cooking method:
- **For Oven:** Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange skewers on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes, brushing with reserved marinade halfway through, until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F or 74°C).
- **For Grill:** Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates. Grill skewers for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, basting with reserved marinade during the last few minutes of cooking.
- **For Air Fryer:** Preheat air fryer to 380°F (195°C). Place skewers in a single layer in the basket (work in batches if necessary). Cook for 10-14 minutes, flipping halfway through and brushing with reserved marinade.
- Serve immediately, optionally garnished with sesame seeds or chopped green onions.
Notes
- For extra flavor, brush the cooked skewers with a little extra honey during the last minute of cooking to create a sticky glaze.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, simmer the reserved marinade in a small saucepan over medium heat until it reduces slightly, about 3-5 minutes.
