Description
A simple, make-ahead red wine sangria flavored with seasonal fruits and warm spices perfect for holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine (like Tempranillo or Merlot)
- 1/2 cup brandy
- 1/4 cup orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 whole star anise
- 1 orange, thinly sliced
- 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped
- 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1 cup sparkling water or club soda (for serving)
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, sugar, cinnamon stick, and star anise. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the sliced orange, chopped apple, and cranberries to the pitcher.
- Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the fruit to infuse the wine.
- When ready to serve, remove the cinnamon stick and star anise if desired.
- Fill glasses with ice. Pour the sangria mixture into the glasses, ensuring each glass gets some fruit.
- Top each serving with a splash of sparkling water or club soda for effervescence.
Notes
- For a White Christmas Sangria variation, substitute the red wine with Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc and use white cranberry juice instead of fresh cranberries.
- If you prefer a stronger spice flavor, lightly muddle a few orange slices before adding them to the pitcher.
- You can prepare the fruit and wine mixture up to 24 hours in advance. Add the sparkling water just before serving.
