Description

A simple, make-ahead red wine sangria flavored with seasonal fruits and warm spices perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine (like Tempranillo or Merlot)
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda (for serving)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, sugar, cinnamon stick, and star anise. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add the sliced orange, chopped apple, and cranberries to the pitcher.
  3. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the fruit to infuse the wine.
  4. When ready to serve, remove the cinnamon stick and star anise if desired.
  5. Fill glasses with ice. Pour the sangria mixture into the glasses, ensuring each glass gets some fruit.
  6. Top each serving with a splash of sparkling water or club soda for effervescence.

Notes

  • For a White Christmas Sangria variation, substitute the red wine with Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc and use white cranberry juice instead of fresh cranberries.
  • If you prefer a stronger spice flavor, lightly muddle a few orange slices before adding them to the pitcher.
  • You can prepare the fruit and wine mixture up to 24 hours in advance. Add the sparkling water just before serving.
