Decadent Nutella Swirl Banana Bread

  • Author: Ahazzam
  • Total Time: 80 min
  • Yield: 1 loaf (about 10 slices)
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Make a moist, rich banana bread featuring a prominent, fudgy Nutella swirl throughout the loaf.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large very ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, browned and cooled slightly
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups (210g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (85g) semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1 cup (250g) Nutella, slightly warmed

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. Brown the butter: Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking, swirling occasionally, until the milk solids turn deep brown and the butter smells nutty. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the mashed bananas, cooled browned butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until combined.
  4. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing only until just combined. Do not overmix. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using.
  7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Dollop half of the warmed Nutella evenly over the batter layer.
  8. Pour the remaining batter over the Nutella layer. Dollop the remaining Nutella on top.
  9. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the Nutella into the batter 3 to 4 times. Do not over-swirl, or the Nutella will mix completely.
  10. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs attached, but no wet batter.
  11. Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes before carefully turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Warming the Nutella slightly makes it easier to spread and swirl into the thick batter.
  • Browning the butter adds a deep, nutty flavor that complements the hazelnut in the Nutella.
  • For the best texture, ensure your bananas are very ripe (mostly black spots).
