Description
This recipe creates a visually stunning, crowd-pleasing chocolate and raspberry trifle, perfect for making an impression at any celebration.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
- Ingredients for cake (eggs, oil, water as per box)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
- 2 cups fresh raspberries
- 1 cup chocolate syrup for drizzling
Instructions
- Prepare and bake the chocolate cake according to the box directions. Let the cake cool completely, then break it into bite-sized pieces.
- Make the custard: In a saucepan, whisk together granulated sugar, water, and cornstarch until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a pudding consistency. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Prepare the cream cheese layer: In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Gradually beat in the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping.
- Assemble the trifle: In a large, clear glass trifle bowl, layer the ingredients. Start with a layer of cake pieces. Top the cake with half of the cooled custard. Spread half of the cream cheese mixture over the custard. Sprinkle with half of the fresh raspberries.
- Repeat the layers: Add another layer of cake pieces, the remaining custard, the remaining cream cheese mixture, and the remaining raspberries.
- Chill the trifle for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
- Before serving, drizzle the top generously with chocolate syrup.
Notes
- You can substitute store-bought brownies or chocolate cookies for the homemade cake layer for a quicker assembly.
- Use a large, clear bowl to show off the distinct layers, which makes this dessert visually stunning.
- This dessert tastes best when made one day ahead.
