Description
Transform your leftover donuts into a rich and comforting casserole with this delightful donut bread pudding recipe. It’s a perfect way to create a decadent dessert or a special brunch treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 glazed or cake donuts, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts, 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- For the Sauce (Optional): 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Spread the donut pieces evenly in the prepared baking dish. If using, sprinkle nuts or chocolate chips over the donuts.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the donut pieces in the baking dish, pressing down gently to ensure all donut pieces are moistened.
- Let the mixture soak for at least 15-20 minutes to allow the donuts to absorb the custard.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the casserole is set and golden brown on top. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
- While the bread pudding is baking, prepare the optional sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and milk. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Let the bread pudding cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
- Serve warm, drizzled with the optional sauce if desired.
Notes
- This recipe is best with day-old donuts as they absorb the custard better.
- You can substitute other types of donuts, but glazed or cake donuts work best for texture.
- For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of bourbon or rum to the custard mixture.
