Description

Enjoy a classic Dutch Apple Pie with a delicious, crumbly streusel topping. This recipe is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 recipe for double pie crust
  • 6 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (about 6 medium apples)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • For the Streusel Topping:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Prepare the pie crust and line a 9-inch pie plate with one crust.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust. Dot the top with the small pieces of butter.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the streusel topping.
  6. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apple filling.
  8. Place the second pie crust over the streusel topping, or create a lattice top if desired. Crimp the edges to seal.
  9. Cut vents in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  10. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C).
  11. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with foil.
  12. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2-3 hours before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

  • You can use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • For extra crispiness, brush the top crust with an egg wash before baking.
