Description
Make a flaky, spiced apple strudel using store-bought puff pastry for a quick and impressive dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (14.1 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and raisins if you are using them. Mix gently until the apples are evenly coated.
- Lightly flour a clean work surface. Unfold one sheet of the thawed puff pastry onto the surface. If the pastry is rectangular, place it so the longer side faces you.
- Spoon half of the apple filling in a line down the center third of the pastry sheet, leaving about a 1-inch border on the top and bottom edges.
- Brush the exposed pastry edges lightly with the melted butter.
- Fold the long edge of the pastry closest to you up and over the filling. Then, fold the opposite long edge over the first fold, creating a sealed log shape. Gently press the ends to seal.
- Carefully transfer the strudel log to the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down. Repeat the process with the second sheet of puff pastry and the remaining filling.
- Brush the tops of both strudels evenly with the beaten egg wash. Cut three or four small slits on the top of each strudel to allow steam to escape.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool slightly more.
- Dust generously with powdered sugar before slicing and serving warm.
Notes
- For a traditional look, you can brush the pastry with melted butter instead of egg wash before baking.
- If you prefer a crunchier texture, sprinkle 1/4 cup of finely chopped walnuts or pecans over the apple filling before rolling.
- Serve this dessert warm with vanilla ice cream or unsweetened whipped cream.
