Description

A simple, layered breakfast casserole using canned biscuits and homemade sausage gravy, perfect for feeding a group with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (16.3 ounce) can refrigerated flaky biscuits
  • 1 pound ground pork sausage
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cut each biscuit into quarters. Arrange the biscuit pieces evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up with a spoon until it is fully browned. Drain off most of the grease, leaving about 2 tablespoons in the skillet.
  4. Whisk the flour into the remaining sausage grease in the skillet. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth. Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring often, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  6. Stir in the salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Remove from heat.
  7. Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish.
  8. If using, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  9. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the biscuits are puffed and lightly golden brown.
  10. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

  • For a make-ahead option, assemble the casserole through step 4, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 12 hours. Add 5 to 10 minutes to the baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
  • You can substitute turkey sausage for pork sausage if desired.
  • For extra flavor, add 1/4 cup of chopped green onions to the gravy before pouring it over the biscuits.
