Description
A simple, layered breakfast casserole using canned biscuits and homemade sausage gravy, perfect for feeding a group with minimal effort.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (16.3 ounce) can refrigerated flaky biscuits
- 1 pound ground pork sausage
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cut each biscuit into quarters. Arrange the biscuit pieces evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up with a spoon until it is fully browned. Drain off most of the grease, leaving about 2 tablespoons in the skillet.
- Whisk the flour into the remaining sausage grease in the skillet. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth. Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring often, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Stir in the salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Remove from heat.
- Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish.
- If using, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the biscuits are puffed and lightly golden brown.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.
Notes
- For a make-ahead option, assemble the casserole through step 4, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 12 hours. Add 5 to 10 minutes to the baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
- You can substitute turkey sausage for pork sausage if desired.
- For extra flavor, add 1/4 cup of chopped green onions to the gravy before pouring it over the biscuits.
