Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in sugar and salt. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
- Gradually stir in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a breadstick shape, about 8-10 inches long.
- Place breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil and minced garlic. Brush the mixture over the breadsticks.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While breadsticks are still warm, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and parsley, if desired.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- For best results, use a thermometer to check the water temperature.
- You can add additional herbs like oregano or basil to the dough or the topping.
- Store leftover breadsticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
