Description

Make the classic, creamy green bean casserole that everyone loves. This easy side dish uses traditional ingredients and is perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh or frozen green beans, trimmed
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 1.5-quart baking dish.
  2. Cook the green beans according to package directions until they are tender-crisp. Drain them well.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
  4. Gently stir in the cooked green beans until they are fully coated with the soup mixture.
  5. Pour the bean mixture into your prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes.
  7. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle 1 cup of the crispy fried onions evenly over the top.
  8. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.
  9. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of crispy fried onions over the top just before you bring it to the table.

Notes

  • You can prepare this creamy green bean casserole ahead of time. Assemble everything except the final topping, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add 10 minutes to the initial baking time if baking straight from the refrigerator.
  • For a Southern green bean casserole variation, stir in 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese with the beans before baking.
  • If you want to make this green bean casserole from scratch, you can replace the canned soup with a homemade mushroom sauce.
