Description

Make this easy, cheesy sausage appetizer, a retro favorite perfect for parties and game days. It uses ground meat, creamy cheese, and small bread slices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground pork sausage or ground beef
  • 1 (10 ounce) package shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 package small pumpernickel or rye bread slices (about 24 slices)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Cook the ground sausage or beef in a large skillet over medium heat until fully browned. Drain off all excess grease.
  3. Return the meat to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low.
  4. Add the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder to the meat.
  5. Stir the mixture constantly until all the cheese is completely melted and the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  6. Place the bread slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Spoon about 1 heaping tablespoon of the meat and cheese mixture onto the center of each bread slice.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the topping is hot and bubbly and the edges of the bread are lightly toasted.
  9. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • You can prepare the meat and cheese mixture up to one day ahead and store it covered in the refrigerator. Reheat gently before topping the bread.
  • For a slightly different flavor, substitute the cheddar cheese with Monterey Jack.
  • If you do not have pumpernickel bread, use small squares of rye bread or sturdy crackers.
