Description

Bake these classic Molasses Crinkle Cookies for a warm, cozy treat perfect for your winter dessert table. They are wonderfully soft on the inside with a delightful sugary crackle on the outside.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses until fully combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Place the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar for rolling into a shallow dish.
  7. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Roll each ball thoroughly in the sugar until completely coated.
  8. Place the sugared dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes. The edges should be set, but the centers will look slightly soft.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For the best crinkle effect, make sure the dough is slightly chilled before rolling, though it is not strictly necessary.
  • Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • You can substitute some of the spices with allspice if you prefer a slightly different flavor profile.
