- 6 pounds ripe pears
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
Instructions
- Wash, peel, core, and quarter the pears.
- Place pears in a large pot or Dutch oven.
- Add sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until pears are very soft, about 20-30 minutes.
- Mash the pears with a potato masher or process in batches in a food processor until smooth or desired consistency.
- Return the pear mixture to the pot.
- Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the butter is very thick and dark, about 1-2 hours.
- Spoon hot pear butter into sterilized jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace.
- Wipe rims and place lids and rings on jars.
- Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes (adjust for altitude).
- Remove jars and let cool completely.

- Use ripe pears for the best flavor and texture.
- Adjust spices to your preference.
- Pear butter can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks if not canning.
