Description
Penne Arrabbiata is a classic Italian pasta dish. It features penne pasta tossed in a spicy tomato sauce made with garlic, tomatoes, and red chili peppers. It’s a simple, flavorful, and satisfying meal perfect for any night of the week.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound penne pasta
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more, to taste)
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
- Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Cook penne pasta according to package directions. Drain, reserving about 1/2 cup of pasta water.
- While pasta is cooking, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Stir in salt and black pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for at least 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Add the drained penne pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat evenly.
- If the sauce seems too thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
- Serve immediately, garnished with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese if desired.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to control the spiciness.
- For a richer sauce, you can add a splash of red wine to the sauce before adding the tomatoes.
- This dish is delicious on its own or served with a side salad and crusty bread.
