Description

Prepare and bake this simple egg and bread casserole fast for a speedy morning meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup cooked, crumbled breakfast sausage
  • 4 slices day-old bread, cubed
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, mustard powder, salt, and pepper until combined.
  3. Stir in the shredded cheese and cooked sausage.
  4. Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak the bread.
  6. Sprinkle any remaining cheese or sausage on top if desired.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is lightly golden brown.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale or day-old bread for the best texture in the casserole.
  • You can substitute ham or bacon for the sausage if you prefer.
  • To make this ahead, assemble the casserole completely, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 12 hours. Add 5 to 10 minutes to the baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
