Description

Make a simple, flavorful tomato sauce using pantry staples. This recipe is fast enough for weeknights and tastes better than store-bought.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes.
  4. Stir in the dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and sugar.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
  6. Let the sauce simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in the fresh chopped basil.
  8. Use immediately over pasta or pizza dough.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender briefly after simmering.
  • If you use whole peeled tomatoes, crush them by hand before adding them to the pot.
  • Taste the sauce before serving and adjust salt or sugar as needed for your tomatoes.
