Description
A rich and flavorful homemade whiskey BBQ sauce perfect for grilling and dipping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup finely chopped onion
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups ketchup
- 1/2 cup whiskey
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Pour in the ketchup, whiskey, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. For a smoother sauce, you can use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender and blend until smooth.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to control the level of heat.
- For a smoky flavor, use a smoky whiskey.
- This sauce is great on ribs, chicken, pulled pork, or as a dipping sauce.
