Description

A recipe for a rich, hearty Bolognese sauce made with ground beef, slow-simmered for deep flavor. This sauce is excellent for pasta or lasagna.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain off excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion, carrots, and celery to the pot. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 8 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the red wine and let it simmer until it reduces by half, about 5 minutes.
  6. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, milk, oregano, salt, pepper, and bay leaf.
  7. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover partially, and cook for at least 2 hours, stirring occasionally. For a richer flavor, simmer for 3 hours.
  8. Remove the bay leaf before serving. Adjust seasoning if needed.

Notes

  • This sauce freezes well. Cool completely before transferring to an airtight container.
  • For a deeper flavor, substitute half the ground beef with ground pork or veal.
  • Serve over your favorite pasta, such as tagliatelle or pappardelle.
