Description
Make classic Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp, similar to what you find at North Shore food trucks, using a rich, buttery, garlicky, and slightly sweet sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1 head garlic, minced (about 10 cloves)
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, grated
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup fresh pineapple juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- In a large bowl, toss the shrimp with half of the soy sauce and black pepper. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.
- In a large skillet or pan, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet. Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Add the remaining soy sauce, brown sugar, pineapple juice, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice to the skillet. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for 3 minutes until the sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens slightly.
- Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the marinated shrimp to the skillet in a single layer if possible. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until the shrimp are pink and cooked through. Do not overcook.
- Toss the shrimp thoroughly in the sauce to coat completely.
- Remove from heat. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving immediately over white rice.
Notes
- For an extra tropical flavor, grill the shrimp skewers instead of pan-frying.
- Serve with a side of coleslaw or grilled pineapple slices.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, let the sauce simmer for an extra 5 minutes before adding the shrimp.
