  • Author: Alexander Knight
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Learn how to make a delicious Onigirazu, a sushi sandwich that’s perfect for a convenient and portable meal. This recipe packs your favorite sushi fillings between layers of rice and nori, creating a satisfying handheld ‘burger’.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup sushi rice, cooked
  • 2 sheets nori (seaweed)
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Your favorite sushi fillings (e.g., cooked shrimp, avocado, cucumber, imitation crab, cooked egg)
  • Soy sauce, for serving
  • Pickled ginger, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Gently fold this mixture into the cooked sushi rice until evenly distributed. Let it cool slightly.
  2. Lay one sheet of nori on a clean, flat surface.
  3. Spread about half of the seasoned sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving a small border around the edges.
  4. Arrange your chosen fillings in the center of the rice.
  5. Spread the remaining sushi rice over the fillings.
  6. Place the second sheet of nori on top of the rice and fillings.
  7. Carefully fold the edges of the nori over the rice and fillings to create a neat package, like a sandwich.
  8. You can either eat it as is, or for a more compact ‘burger’, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and let it sit for a few minutes before slicing in half.
  9. Serve with soy sauce and pickled ginger.

Notes

  • Make sure your sushi rice is properly cooked and seasoned for the best flavor.
  • Don’t overfill the onigirazu, or it will be difficult to wrap.
  • Experiment with different fillings to create your own unique sushi sandwich.
