Description

Enjoy a comforting and flavorful French Onion Chicken Skillet, a one-pan meal that brings the classic soup flavors to your dinner table with tender chicken and savory onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside.
  3. Add sliced onions to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Add minced garlic, thyme, and rosemary to the skillet. Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  5. Pour in beef broth, white wine (if using), and Worcestershire sauce. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  6. Return the chicken to the skillet. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and tender.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Top each serving with a slice of Gruyere cheese and let it melt, or place the skillet under the broiler for a minute until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can caramelize the onions for a longer period until they are deep golden brown.
  • If you don’t have Gruyere cheese, Swiss or provolone cheese can be substituted.
  • Serve this skillet dish with crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.
